Hurricane Irene might bring the hammer down on Brooklyn this weekend, or maybe it’ll just be a small annoyance. Its too early to tell. Either way, I’ll probably be running in the rain this weekend. In honor of long runs in the rain, here’s a video of Markos Geneti winning the 2011 Los Angeles Marathon in the rain.

The Leadville 100 is this weekend. It is one of my dream races, but my running of it is probably many, many years away. For now, I’ll follow fellow runners online as they race across the sky. Good luck to everyone out there this weekend. Here’s a video from last years race to inspire the rest of us to get in some miles this weekend.

Spring is in the air and I am inspired and ready to take things to the next level, and so I am restarting the Friday inspiration series where I post running videos to get stoked for the weekends long run.

Today’s video is one I have posted before, but something about this video of Ryan Hall and Josh Cox just sticks in my mind. Maybe it’s the Johnny Cash song and how well the lyrics match the stoicism and fatalism of long distance running. Maybe it is Josh and Ryan’s easy stride as they knock out mile after mile on a sub six pace. Maybe it is the gorgeous scenery. I dare you to watch this video and not want to go for a run.

This weekend the marquee ultra running event Western States is happening in California. One hundred miles through the Sierra Nevadas. Gorgeous. Hard. Legendary.

Someday, I’d love to run this thing, but for now, I’ll just have to settle for watching youtube videos.

I think I should probably call this weeks video Friday Education instead of Friday inspiration. As I get more serious about running, I am learning more and more about the sport. Learning about effective training means learning about Arthut Lydiard, the running coach who revolutionized distance runner.

Check out this video where the Lydiard method is explained:

As for me, there won’t be a true long run this weekend. I’m battling a number of aches and pains and I’m going to listen to my body and take it easy. I think it is better to ease back into training instead of forcing a higher mileage week this soon after the marathon.

I have nothing much planned running wise this weekend. My long run will probably be somewhere between six and eight miles. I plan to sleep a lot and hang out with E. It’ll be nice to not have to dedicate half of saturday to a run… but I am also missing the miles. Does that mean I have a problem?

Anyway, for your weekend viewing pleasure here is the trailer for bad running movie. By common agreement Once a Runner is the best book about running ever written. Apparently, it was also made into a movie, what looks like it was a very very bad movie. Read the book though, it is awesome.

I wasn’t much, just a quick jog around the neighborhood, but I hit five hundred miles for the year this morning, two months earlier than I hit the same milestone last year. I’m feeling good, I’m feeling healthy and I’m feeling ready for my marathon at the end of the month.

Now, check out this amazing footage for the world 24 championships yesterday. One of the guys running in this video logs his miles on the same website I do. He ran 248.454 km (roughly 154 miles) and finished 12th IN THE WORLD. In training for this race, he routinely put in weeks of over 200 miles. An amazing performance which really puts my little 500 miles for the year in perspective.
